The Colombian Congress voted to ban bullfighting throughout the country. The bill was passed with an overwhelming majority of votes (93 for, 2 against). This was reported by MIR 24 with reference to El Tiempo.

“We do not believe that torture and cruelty can be part of culture,” said Senator Juan Carlos Lozada.

The decision to ban bullfighting was the result of a multi-year campaign that has gained momentum over the past seven years. Despite resistance from some politicians and cultural figures who considered bullfighting an important part of the national heritage, public opinion gradually swayed in favor of animal protection.

It is worth noting that Colombia is not the first Latin American country to abandon bullfighting. Previously, Argentina and Cuba said goodbye to this practice, and in Mexico and Peru bullfighting is still legal.
