Japanese food giant Kirin Holdings has launched an electric spoon that can enhance the taste of salt in dishes without adding salt.

This week's spoon, previously awarded an Ig Nobel prize for its innovative research, uses microcurrents to stimulate the tongue's taste buds, thereby tricking the brain into creating the sensation of a saltier taste.

Kirin plans to sell 200 of the spoons at 19 800 yen ($127 USD) apiece through its online store this month, and a limited run at retail stores in Japan next month.

The company has an ambitious goal of selling a million spoons worldwide over the next five years, and plans to begin sales abroad as early as next year. This was reported by mk.ru with reference to Reuters.
