A special event dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Turkmen poet and thinker Magtymguly Fragi was held at the UN headquarters in New York, the press service of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reports.

It was organized by the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN jointly with UNESCO and TURKSA under the motto “300 years of following the path of peace and trust of Magtymguly Fragi” and dedicated to World Poetry Day.

The solemn event was attended by the heads of UNESCO and TURKSOY missions to the UN, the Chairman of ECOSOC, ambassadors of UN member countries, diplomats and staff of UN agencies. It was noted that in 2023, UNESCO decided to internationally celebrate the 300th anniversary of Magtymguly, and TURKSOY declared 2024 the Year of Magtymguly.

Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Aksoltan Atayeva emphasized that Magtymguly’s poetry goes beyond national borders and influences the Turkic world and other regions. His manuscripts, included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, were distributed throughout Central Asia, Afghanistan, the Caucasus, Iran, Russia and the Middle East.

Participants noted that the foreign policy of neutral Turkmenistan continues Magtymguly’s ideas about peace and the role of Turkmens in global cooperation. The symbolism of the adoption in the anniversary year of the UN resolution on declaring 2025 the International Year of Peace and Trust at the initiative of Turkmenistan was emphasized. At the event, the works of Magtymguly and other celebrants of 2024 - poets and thinkers from different countries - were read out.
