Eight Turkmen universities entered the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking

Eight higher educational institutions of Turkmenistan were included in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, published in 2023. The ranking measures the desire of universities to improve environmental infrastructure and their contribution to sustainable development in the field of environmental protection, reports the publication “Turkmenistan: Golden Age”.

Universities are assessed based on six indicators:

  • University infrastructure and its impact on the environment
  • Energy consumption and saving indicators
  • Recycling
  • Education and research in the field of ecology
  • Rational use of water resources
  • Transport policy

The leader among Turkmen universities was the Engineering and Technological University of Turkmenistan. Oguzhan, who took 432nd place. The university scored a total of 6660 points, demonstrating good results in all assessment criteria.

The Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A. took second place in the ranking among Turkmen universities. Niyazov, who is ranked 456th.

This year, five Turkmen universities were included in the UI GreenMetric ranking for the first time:

  • Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A. Niyazov
  • International University of Oil and Gas named after Y. Kakaev
  • State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan
  • Turkmen Agricultural Institute
  • Turkmen State Institute of Finance

Three more universities - the Institute of Telecommunications and Informatics of Turkmenistan, the Engineering and Technological University of Turkmenistan named after Oguzhan and the country's Institute of Engineering, Technical and Transport Communications are participating in the rating not for the first time.

The UI GreenMetric ranking has been compiled by the University of Indonesia since 2010. 96 universities took part in the first ranking, and since its inception the number of participants has increased significantly. This year, the UI GreenMetric ranking includes 1,183 universities from 85 countries.

Every year, to participate in the ranking, universities provide relevant data, which is researched and analyzed by independent international experts, specialists, and scientists. Based on data evaluation and points scored, universities are ranked in a global list.

The final results are published in December.

Turkmenistan is a party to a number of international agreements and conventions in the field of environmental protection and rational use of natural resources aimed at social, economic and environmental global sustainable development.

Within the framework of these agreements and conventions, Turkmenistan takes an active part in the development and implementation of measures to protect the environment, rational use of natural resources, and improve the environmental culture of the population.
