The Scottish authorities rejected a bill that would have acquitted women accused of witchcraft in the 16th-18th centuries, writes WORLD 24.

The initiator of the bill was MP Natalie Don, who previously proposed posthumously rehabilitating victims of witch hunts. However, she was appointed minister last year and the bill was withdrawn in accordance with parliamentary rules.

Historians estimate that between 1563 and 1736, around 4 000 women were executed in Scotland for witchcraft.
