In the San'in region of Japan, a snow crab weighing 1.2 kg was sold at auction for a record price of 66 thousand USD. This is the first time in the history of Hyogo Prefecture that such money was received for a simple crustacean, reports gismeteo.ru with reference to The Mainichi.

The previous record belonged to a snowtail, for which they paid just over 20 thousand USD.

The winner of the auction was restaurateur R. Uemura, who said that he was willing to pay any price to get the crab on the first day. He said the quality of the crustaceans at Hamasaka Port is legendary, and he hopes this will help him become more popular.

Snow crabs caught in San'in are called "matsuba-gani" and are considered a winter delicacy in Japan. They are prized for their taste and high quality meat.
