Turkmenistan and UNEP specified priorities for further cooperation

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Inger Andersen specified priority areas for further interaction between the parties during an online meeting, the press service of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reports.

The interlocutors exchanged views on current issues in the field of ecology, climate change and environmental protection. Meredov emphasized that Turkmenistan considers solving climate change problems as an integral part of sustainable development. He also noted the country's active support for the Paris Climate Agreement, ratified in 2016.

The parties expressed a common opinion regarding the need to join efforts at the international, regional and national levels to solve global environmental problems.

The importance of multilateral and systemic partnerships in coordinated activities with international organizations was also emphasized. In this context, Turkmenistan confirmed the relevance of creating a Regional Center for Climate Technologies for Central Asian countries with headquarters in Ashgabat.

It was also emphasized that the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and the UN Environment Program on November 13 this year is a significant step in the development of cooperation. This memorandum will form the basis for joint efforts to develop programs and projects aimed at introducing climate technologies and innovations in Turkmenistan and Central Asia.
