A new Internet cable has been launched in China, which provides a record data transfer speed of 1.2 terabits per second. This was reported by the "AiF" newspaper with reference to the "South China Morning Post".

The cable, more than 3 000 kilometers long, connects China's three largest cities: Beijing, Wuhan and Guangzhou. It was connected to the network in July 2023 and, after successful tests, began operating at full capacity.

Such well-known Chinese organizations as Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Huawei Technologies and Cernet Corporation took part in the project.

Chinese cable has surpassed American competitors in speed ten times. Experts expected data transfer rates exceeding one terabits per second to become a reality only in 2025.

The new cable is part of China's Cernet project, which connects educational and research centers within the country to provide high-speed Internet connections. The project demonstrates a commitment to technological sovereignty by developing and producing all software and hardware locally.
