The Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan hosted a seminar on preparation for the interactive dialogue on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) with the UN Human Rights Council.

The event was hosted by UNDP and the Government of Turkmenistan.

The seminar was attended by international UNDP expert Thomas Baranovas, members of the state delegation, including representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan and the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan's dialogue with the UN Human Rights Council on the fourth cycle of the UPR is scheduled to be held on November 6 in Geneva, Switzerland.

During the UPR dialogues, Turkmenistan receives recommendations for improving the national human rights system. Turkmenistan submitted the report of the third cycle of the UPR in 2018 and accepted 172 recommendations out of 193.

The Universal Periodic Review is a unique process that involves periodically reviewing the human rights situation in all 193 UN member states. The ultimate goal of this mechanism is to improve the human rights situation and combat human rights violations wherever they occur.

Turkmenistan's draft national report on the UPR will contribute to the country's efforts to comply with international human rights obligations, as well as accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
