Turkmen delegation is in Georgia to study a child-friendly justice system

Representatives of Turkmenistan are on a working visit to Georgia from October 23 to 27 to study the experience of a child-friendly justice system.

The visit was organized with the assistance of UNICEF country offices in Turkmenistan and Georgia.

Eight government delegates from various government agencies of Turkmenistan interact with Georgian government agencies such as the Ministry of Justice, the Prosecutor General's Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

During the working sessions, methods and procedures used in Georgia to deal with children in contact with the law are discussed, with an emphasis on the protection of victims and witnesses through specialized services (such as Barnahus), diversion strategies, alternative sentencing for children, in conflict with the law, and preventive measures.

Members of the Turkmen delegation also became familiar with the interdisciplinary approach to managing individual cases with the involvement of professionally trained social workers and psychologists.

Turkmen representatives, having studied Georgia's rich experience, will evaluate these practices in the context of the needs and circumstances of Turkmenistan, paying particular attention to the well-being of child victims and witnesses of crime, as well as children in conflict with the law.

This visit was made possible thanks to the support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Turkmenistan, according to a UNICEF press release.
