UNESCO, together with Interpol, will create a virtual museum from artifacts stolen from museums over the years, writes The Guardian.
The museum will open in 2025. The initial collection will include approximately 600 missing artifacts. The project cost an estimated 2,5 million USD and was designed by Francis Kéré, the first African to receive the prestigious Pritzker Prize for Architecture.
The museum's exhibits will be presented in the form of three-dimensional models of artifacts, recreated from photographs or images. For each of them, annotations are provided that tell about their history and cultural value.
“These are objects that exist physically, but we don’t know where”, - explained UNESCO Deputy Director General Ernesto Ottone.
Interpol databases contain information on 52 thousand artifacts missing from museums, private collections and archaeological sites around the world.
