In one of the episodes of the “Legends of Central Asia” program on the “Mir” 24 TV channel, they talked about Altymurad Orazdurdyev, a Turkmen weightlifter, three-time world champion, Olympic record holder, three-time European champion, Asian champion and Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, reports the IIC.

Altymurad Orazdurdyev was born in 1969 in the village of Sakarchaga, Mary velayat, Turkmen SSR. In 1982, he moved to Ashgabat, where he entered a sports boarding school. Brono Abrahamyan became his coach, who revealed his potential and prepared him for performances at all-Union and international competitions.

In 1989, in Athens, Altymurad, as part of the USSR national team, became the world and European champion in the weight category up to 75 kg. The following year he repeated his success at the World Championships in Budapest and the European Championships in Aalborg. In 1991 in Wladyslawowo he became the European champion for the third time.

In 1992, A. Orazdurdyev won the CIS championship and was included as the only athlete from Turkmenistan in the Unified Team to participate in the Olympic Games in Barcelona. However, at the last moment, due to the strong-willed decision of the head coach of the national team, Vasily Alekseev, he was unable to step onto the platform.

In 1993, at the world championship in Melbourne, Altymurad, already as a member of the independent team of Turkmenistan, again became the world champion, setting two world records in the weight category up to 76 kg - in the clean and jerk and in the combined event. And in 1994 - champion of Asia and the Asian Games in Hiroshima.

Altymurad Orazdurdyev was not only an outstanding athlete, but also a modest and kind person. He loved his homeland, his family and his people. He also studied at the National Institute of Sports and Tourism of Turkmenistan. In 1997, he died of kidney failure at the age of 27. He was buried in his native village of Sakarchaga.
