A resident of Kentucky discovered the legendary treasure of the American Civil War. It is reported by lenta.ru with reference to The New York Times.

Over 700 XIX century gold coins were found in a cornfield in early July. Specialists and antique coin dealers have already named this find the Great Kentucky Treasure because of its rarity and value. All coins have denominations of one, ten and twenty dollars and were minted in 1861-1863.

According to experts, the total cost of the Great Kentucky Treasure is at least a million dollars, but it could be much higher. Moreover, each of the dozens of dollar coins found is worth about a thousand modern dollars. All of them have already been sold online.

Of particular value to collectors is the 20 dollars “double eagle” coin. The cost of such coins at auction can reach 380 thousand dollars, depending on the condition.

At the beginning of the Civil War, fierce fighting was going on in Kentucky, and its inhabitants fought on both sides of the conflict. With the outbreak of war, many wealthy citizens buried their savings, hoping to return for them in peacetime.

Legends of buried Kentucky treasures have attracted treasure hunters for more than 150 years, and a new find confirms the reality of these legends.
