Russia Day is an important public holiday of the Russian Federation, celebrated annually on June 12. Until 2002, it was referred to as the Day of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Russia, which was adopted on June 12, 1990. On June 12, 1998, the first President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin, in his television address, proposed to rename the holiday to “Day of Russia”. Officially, the holiday received a new name on February 1, 2002, when the provisions of the new Labor Code of the Russian Federation came into force. Since 1991, this day has been considered a non-working day in Russia.
On June 12, in all Russian cities, many solemn and festive events are held, in which citizens of all ages take part. In the Kremlin, the President of Russia presents State Prizes of the Russian Federation, and the main celebrations, of course, take place in Moscow on Red Square and end with grand fireworks display in honor of the Day of Russia.
