According to the US Geological Survey, the eruption began in the volcanic crater of the peak of Kilauea Halemaumau in the territory of the Hawaiian Volcano National Park.
Kilauea is believed to be the home of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, in Hawaiian mythology and oral legend.
