Training on human rights in journalism completed in Ashgabat

A two-day seminar for journalists “Best Practices in Human Rights Education in Journalism” ended today at the UN building in Ashgabat. Cooperation of journalists with the Office of the Ombudsman on the coverage of human rights issues in the media”.

The seminar was organized by UNDP in Turkmenistan within the framework of the project “Providing assistance in strengthening the institutional capacity of the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan”.

Representatives of the Turkmen media, as well as students of the faculties of journalism and representatives of public organizations participated in the two-day training.

Today, the participants of the seminar considered the Paris Principles, their significance for journalists, as well as the role, duties and activities of the National Commissioner for Human Rights in Turkmenistan in working with journalists. Good examples were given from the practice of cooperation between journalists and Ombudsmen's offices from all over the world.

Resul Dovletmuradov, a representative of the Turkmenportal Internet publication, spoke about his impressions of the seminar:

“The seminar provided an opportunity to learn about the new rules for reporting events that require fact-checking, and to explore all the risks of disinformation that can negatively affect the reader and reduce his trust in the source. Participants performed practical exercises, which is good for consolidating the acquired skills. Thus, various cases were considered on the example of news written from various sources and which raised doubts among readers about the veracity of the information”.
