Education specialists and members of youth groups in Dashoguz and Lebap were trained on disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change.

The trainings were held within the framework of the Joint Program “Empowering and Engaging Youth to Mitigate the Multifaceted Threats of a Pandemic in the Field of Health”, implemented by the Government of Turkmenistan with the support of four UN agencies – UNICEF, UNFPA, UNODC and IOM.

These trainings were held in light of the increasing frequency of natural disasters around the world, as evidenced by the recent tragic events in Turkey and Syria, according to a UNICEF press release.

As a result of the trainings, the specialists of the education system gained deeper knowledge about measures to reduce the risks of natural disasters. The skills acquired by specialists will allow introducing the topics of disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change into the educational process using the approach of human security in emergency situations.

Upon completion of the trainings, the participants were given educational materials for distribution and use in 900 secondary schools in the Dashoguz and Lebap velayats.
