Levent Kurnaz, a Turkish scientist, head of the climate change research center at Bogazici University, said that by 2050 the level of the Marmara Sea could rise so much that it would lead to flooding of a number of areas in Istanbul, write “Argumenty i Fakty” with reference to the DHA agency.

If in 25 years the level of the Sea of Marmara rises by 50 centimeters, the Kadikoy area and the villas on the Bosphorus will be flooded. According to Kurnaz, in order to save the Dolmabahce and Chiragan palaces and other ancient monuments from flooding, it is necessary to build protective walls. The danger of being under water is real for all areas of Istanbul, located at a height of a meter and a half above sea level.

The level of the Marmara Sea is affected by the melting of glaciers and rising sea levels.
