Observers from the CIS started observing the elections of deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan

A group of observers from the Commonwealth of Independent States has begun monitoring the preparation and conduct of the elections of deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan of the seventh convocation, which will be held on March 26, 2023, reports the CIS Executive Committee.

Within the framework of the work of the group, a meeting was held between the Deputy Secretary General of the CIS Ilkhom Nematov and the Chairman of the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums in Turkmenistan Gulmurad Muradov. The head of the Central Election Commission spoke about the measures taken by the electoral bodies to prepare for the elections, dwelling in detail on the nomination and registration of candidates.

Ilkhom Nematov, in turn, expressed his gratitude to the host country for the invitation to take part in the observation of the parliamentary elections. He also noted that the main tasks of the Mission of Observers are to objectively assess the election campaign for its compliance with national legislation and to assist in holding free and democratic elections.

Nematov assured that the observers would carry out their functions strictly in accordance with the laws of Turkmenistan, based on the generally recognized principles and norms of international law in the field of organizing and holding elections, respecting the sovereignty of the state.
