Chinese short video service TikTok has announced that it will restrict video viewing for users under the age of 18, writes Life.ru with reference to a statement from the company.
The restriction will operate in such a way that after 60 minutes of viewing, you will need to enter a passcode on the device in order to continue browsing. It will be possible to completely disable this feature only with the consent of the parents.
It is considered that this will provide a kind of barrier to endless scrolling and will protect the digital well-being of young audiences.
“In the coming weeks, every TikTok user under the age of 18 will automatically be subject to a 60-minute daily screen time limit. Teenagers who reach this limit will be prompted to enter a passcode to continue browsing. They can disable the feature entirely, but if they do so and spend more than 100 minutes a day on TikTok, they will be asked to set a new limit”, - the statement said.
TikTok has also updated its Family Pairing feature, which permits parents to link their account to their children's account and set controls to filter videos and set their own schedules for the service.
TikTok is a social network where users create and watch short videos. The service is owned by Beijing-based “ByteDance”.
