American scientists are faced with a shortage of experimental monkeys for a number of tests and studies, writes News.ru with reference to the Financial Times. The reason is the reduction in the import of animals for experiments from China and Cambodia.
In 2020, the PRC imposed a ban on the export of laboratory animals, which caused a sharp jump in prices for them: their cost has tripled in general and the price increase will continue further. Imports of animals from Cambodia have declined after the US accused a number of local officials of illegally supplying monkeys to US laboratories.
Monkeys, or rather non-human primates, are used as experimental animals to test the safety of medications in the early stages of research.
