Turkmenistan considered issues of compliance with the Food Code

A seminar on the issues of practical harmonization of national standards of Turkmenistan with the standards of Codex Alimentarius was held in Ashgabat.

As per the “Turkmenistan: Golden Age” edition, the event was held by a Representative of the Regional Offiсe for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO/Europe) Geronimas Maskelunas during his visit to Turkmenistan.

Codex Alimentarius or the Food Code presents a set of internationally accepted standards, technical norms and rules, guidelines and other recommendations for food products. Within its framework the international standards, manuals and instructions, which regulate safety and quality of food products entering the world market, as well as ensure compliance with the conditions of “fair trade”.

In 2012, Turkmenistan become a member of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. In 2019, the country was chosen for implementation of the project of the Codex Trust Fund of the. In 2021, the Interdepartmental Commission of Turkmenistan on the issues of the Codex Alimentarius was established.

During the seminar, the progress made in Turkmenistan in the field of food safety was reviewed, and the members of the Interdepartmental Commission also got acquainted with the differences in the food legislation of the European Union and the EurAsEC.

Compliance with the Codex Alimentarius national standards will contribute to the expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of food safety for national food producers.

It should be noted that the Interdepartmental Commission on the Codex Alimentarius includes representatives of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service, the State Service “Turkmenstandartlary”, the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, as well as the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan.

For the implementation of the Codex Alimentarius Standards in the country is responsible a State sanitary-epidemiological Service of the Ministry of healthcare and medical industry of Turkmenistan.
