President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed today a law on ratification of the agreement with Turkmenistan on delimitation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border and delimitation of adjacent sections of fishing zones in the Caspian Sea. The press-service of the Head of Kazakhstan reported it.

The document determines the course of the state border line between the two countries on the Caspian Sea, delimiting their territorial waters, as well as the line of demarcation of adjacent sections of fishing zones. The lines of demarcation are built on the principle of the “median line”- a generally recognized technique used in modern international maritime law to delimit maritime spaces between states with opposite or adjacent coasts.

The Agreement was signed by Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan in October 2021 following the results of the state visit of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Ashgabat.

The Majlis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan approved the ratification of the treaty with Turkmenistan on October 5, 2022. The Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan ratified the Agreement on October 20, 2022.

The law will promote further strengthening of good neighboring relations between two countries and development of mutually beneficial cooperation.

The total length of the state border between Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan is about 458 km. This is the shortest international border of both states.
