“Azerenergy” OJSC has begun construction of a 540-meter-long overpass deep into the Caspian Sea, which permits to freely take cold water from a depth of 8 meters, and water pumping stations in two places, reports report.az.
Water from the Caspian Sea is needed to ensure the stable operation of the “Shimal” power plant, located in the Shuvalan village. It is noted that due to the decrease in the water level, the intake of cooling water from the sea has become difficult, and in the short term could lead to a complete cessation of operation of the “Shimal-1” and “Shimal-2” power plants.
The construction of a new overpass and water pumping stations will permit water to be drawn from a greater depth, and its temperature will be 2,6 degrees lower. In total, 4 pipes will be laid on both sides of the new overpass, and 8 pumps will operate at 2 pumping stations.
It is also noted that at present time the work is ahead of the schedule by a month, and the project is planned to be completed in the first half of 2023.
