Droupadi Murmu, a candidate from the National Democratic Alliance, won the presidential elections in India, reports RIA Novosti.
According to the results of the vote count, Droupadi Murmu won 64% against 36%, recruited by Yashwant Sinha and was elected as the 15th President of the Republic of India.
“Droupadi Murmu has dedicated her life to serving society and empowering the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized. She has rich administrative experience and was an outstanding governor. I am sure that she will become a great president of our country. Her understanding of political issues and compassionate nature will greatly benefit our country,” said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Let us note that in India, the president is elected for 5 years by members of the electoral college, consisting of members of both houses of the country's parliament and members of the legislative assemblies of all states.

Droupadi Murmu was born in 1958 in the state of Odisha in the Santhal tribe. Before entering politics, she worked as a teacher. From 2000 to 2004, Murmu served as Minister in Odisha, first in the Department of Trade and Transport and then in the Department of Fisheries and Livestock. In 2015, Droupadi Murmu was sworn in as the first female Governor of Jharkhand.
