A kilo of hand-rolled Japanese tea leaves sold for a record 1,96 million yen (about 15 466 USD), reports Kyodo news.
Green tea leaves were grown in Fujinomiya Prefecture and sold at the annual auction of the Shizuoka Japanese Tea Market. According to eyewitnesses, although this year the tea grew more slowly than usual, its quality remains good.
Tea Market president Yasuhide Uchino said, that despite ever-increasing fuel and raw material prices, the market is “working hard to provide delicious tea at far prices”.
It is noted, that at 8:10 local time, the trading volume of green tea grown in Shizuoka was 1732 kg with an average price per kilogram of 39,70 USD.
