Turkmenistan and UN Office of Counter-Terrorism discussed further cooperation

On January 28, Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov held a videoconference meeting with the UN Under-Secretary-General, Head of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov. The country's Foreign Ministry website reports it.

During the talks, Meredov confirmed Turkmenistan's deep commitment to participate in the UN activities to strengthen the international system of countering terrorism, in consolidating international efforts to combat the terrorist threat as well as drug trafficking and human trafficking.

The parties discussed the Central Asia’s Joint Plan of Action to counter terrorism, the updated version of which will be adopted at the International Conference in Tashkent. This Conference, dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the implementation of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia, will be held on March 3-4.

The Turkmen party expressed gratitude for the assistance in the development and further materialization of the Action Plan for the implementation of the National Strategy of Turkmenistan for the Prevention of Violent Extremism and Counteraction to Terrorism for 2021-2024, performed jointly by the UN CTU and the Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy.

The importance of cooperation for Central Asia with the involvement of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy capacity was noted. At the same time, the important steps of the Government of Turkmenistan in this direction were emphasized. Currently, as it is well known, the Turkmen party has prepared a draft Resolution of the UN General Assembly ‘Strengthening regional and international cooperation to ensure peace, stability and sustainable development in the Central Asian region", that will be submitted for consideration by the 76th Session of the General Assembly.

The adoption of this Resolution will contribute to the practical implementation of the Central Asian countries international initiatives including in the field of counterterrorism, the parties noted.
