Armenian President Armen Sarkissian has announced that he is leaving his post. The resignation letter was published on the President's website. Sargsyan has served as president since the spring of 2018 and his term of office expires only in 2025. According to “MIR 24”, Armen Sarkissian called the reason for his resignation the fact that the role of the head of state in a parliamentary country is formal. The roots of important problems are hidden in the basic law. “A paradoxical situation has developed in the country, when the president has to be the guarantor of statehood, in fact, having no real instrument,” Sarkissian believes.

According to the Constitution of Armenia, after the resignation of the president until the newly elected president takes office, his duties are temporarily performed by the Chairman of the National Assembly. Now this position is held by Alen Simonyan.
