Our athletes are preparing for the world championship, which will be held from December 7 to 17 in Tashkent (Uzbekistan). It will be the 86th tournament for men and 29th for women.
This will be one of the most important starts for Turkmen athletes. To date, 12 athletes are included in the national team of Turkmenistan of applicants for a trip to Uzbekistan.
In the entire history of the World Weightlifting Championships, only 2 athletes from Turkmenistan have been awarded the title of champions.
In 1993, making his debut under the flag of Turkmenistan at international competitions, Altymurad Orazdurdyev won the gold medal at the World Championship in Melbourne in the weight category up to 76 kg (in the snatch he lifted 167.5 kg, and in the clean and jerk 202,5 kg. The sum of the double event 370 kg - by that moment is a world record).
In 2021, the Turkmen weightlifter Yulduz Jumabayeva was awarded the gold of the 2018 World Weightlifting Championship in the weight category up to 45 kg. Initially, Tunya Sukcharoen from Thailand took the lead in this weight. Later, the Thai athlete was disqualified and deprived of a medal for violating anti-doping rules, which became known after rechecking the samples of athletes who performed at the 2018 World Cup in Ashgabat. As a result of the redistribution of medals, Yulduz Jumabayeva was declared the winner.
