Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan have completed the legal registration of land and sea borders. This follows from the treaty on the delimitation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border and the delimitation of adjacent sections of fishing zones in the Caspian Sea and the intergovernmental Agreement on the border regime, signed today following the meeting of the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev with the head of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat, the official website of the President reports. "Today we adopted a number of important documents, among which a special place is occupied by the Treaty on the delimitation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border and the delimitation of adjacent fishing areas in the Caspian Sea, as well as the intergovernmental Agreement on the border regime. Thus, we are completing the legal registration of land and sea borders between our countries. And this has political significance, "Tokayev said at a briefing following the talks.

In total, following the negotiations, 20 documents were signed. Among them are the Joint Statement of the two Presidents, the Agreement on the Delimitation of the Kazakh-Turkmen State Border and the Delimitation of Adjacent Sections of Fishing Zones in the Caspian Sea, the Agreement on the Regime of the Kazakh-Turkmen State Border, the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Civil Defense, Prevention and Elimination of Emergencies, on organizing the exchange of preliminary information on goods and vehicles moving between the two countries. A Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of environmental protection and a number of other documents were also signed.

It should be noted that the Agreement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan on delimitation and the process of demarcation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border was signed by the heads of the two states on July 5, 2001 in Astana.

On April 18, 2017, the Interstate Agreement on the demarcation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border was signed in Astana. The adoption of the Agreement on the state border regime was necessary to complete the work on this issue.

The total length of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border is about 458.3 km.
