The first Youth Climate Conference was held in Turkmenistan

Ashgabat hosted today the first Youth Conference on Climate in Turkmenistan (YCC), which brought together representatives of the country's Youth Organization, a group of SDG ambassadors in Turkmenistan and other young activists.

It was organized by the United Nations in Turkmenistan together with the British Embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, and other national partners.

The conference was held in a hybrid format. Its panel session was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, which was joined online by the rest of the forum participants, who also took part in the work of four further thematic working groups. These are students of various higher educational institutions of the country, both in the capital and in the velayat.

The main goal of the Youth Conference was to create an opportunity for Turkmen youth to discuss and present the key problems of climate change, as well as develop the actions necessary to solve them. The Forum has become a platform for the exchange of experience, knowledge, thoughts and ideas on strengthening global action to combat climate change.

Also, the organizers intend to encourage and prepare these young people to actively participate in the upcoming COY16 conference in Glasgow and in all future YCC.

Among the main tasks of the conference:

  • Expand the Final Summary of Turkmenistan Youth Initiatives for COY16 and COP26 to be presented at COY16;
  • develop 10 creative solutions for youth to implement in 2022;
  • create a functioning network of youth activists on climate change issues.

The first Youth Conference on Climate in Turkmenistan is timed to coincide with another Conference of Youth (COY-16), which traditionally will be held on the eve of the annual UN Conference on Climate Change, also known as the Conference of the Parties (COP). This year, COY16 will take place on October 28-31 in Glasgow, United Kingdom, where young change leaders from around the world will meet in preparation for the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP26). Both global forums are organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
