The resumption of the export of Turkmen gas to Iran, as well as promising areas of bilateral cooperation in the trade and economic sphere, were discussed today by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

The meeting was held within the framework of the participation of the President of Turkmenistan in the meeting of the leaders of the SCO countries in Dushanbe, the Iranian President's press service reported.

According to her, the parties have agreed to settle the gas issue.

The President of Turkmenistan emphasized the importance of expanding energy exchange, improving the work of the joint commission on economic partnership, increasing the volume of cargo transportation between the countries. Berdimuhamedov also invited his Iranian counterpart to take part in the 6 summit of the heads of the Caspian states and the 15th high-level meeting of the heads of the ECO member states to be held in our country in October and November this year, as well as to pay an official visit to Turkmenistan at any time convenient for him.

Turkmenistan has been supplying gas to Iran since December 1997. But in early 2017, he was forced to restrict natural gas supplies to a neighboring country due to the debts of the National Iranian Gas Company. In August 2018, Turkmengas State Corporation filed for NIGK with the International Arbitration, which ruled in favor of Turkmenistan and ordered Tehran to pay Ashgabat $ 2 billion.
