A new joint UNDP and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan project "Developing a National Adaptation Planning Process in Turkmenistan" was presented to the project stakeholders during the online Local Project Appraisal Committee Meeting.

The three-year project is funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and aims at increasing the resilience and adaptation capacity of Turkmenistan through the development of the National Adaptation Process (NAP) focusing on strengthening the institutional framework for the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change, increasing the national adaptation planning capacity and building a strong evidence base for adaptation planning in the water sector of the country. In the framework of the project, UNDP together with other project partners will work on strengthening the institutional coordination mechanism and governance processes to ensure the multisectoral adaptation planning and implementation.

“Turkmenistan is vulnerable to climate change due to constantly rising temperatures and growing water shortages. While climate change affects the entire economy, the water sector is hit hardest. UNDP is ready to work closely with the Government on developing a national Adaptation Planning process to strengthen country’s capacities to respond to climate change”- said Natia Natsvlishvili, UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in Turkmenistan.

The meeting gathered representatives of the national ministries and entities involved in the development of the national adaptation planning process and focused on the discussions of project implementation activities which will start in September 2021 in Ashgabat and Dashoguz.

In the framework of the project ""Developing a National Adaptation Planning Process in Turkmenistan" UNDP will partner with the Government of Turkmenistan to strengthen its adaptive and resiliency capacities to climate change by integrating climate risks and adaptation measures into planning and budgeting processes via the development of a national adaptation process.

The project will complement current UNDP portfolio on climate change and enhance capacity of the national Ministries directly involved in climate change-related issues and development of the national adaptation planning process. It is expected that the project will result in the development of a sound and dynamic national climate change adaptation strategy and relevant action plan.
