The first meeting of the inter-Sectoral Commission on environmental protection was held in Ashgabat, which was established on October 23, 2020 in accordance with the Decree of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov "in order to expand cooperation between Turkmenistan and international structures in the field of environmental protection".

According to the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the participants of the meeting exchanged views on the main areas of work of the inter-Sectoral Commission, issues of the work plan for 2020. They also discussed the implementation of the International Convention on environmental protection by Turkmenistan and the creation of working groups within the Commission.

Separately, the meeting discussed the problems of the Aral Sea that have a negative impact on nature, climate, and human health. At the same time, the importance of the UN General Assembly resolutions "on cooperation between the United Nations and The International Fund for saving the Aral Sea" adopted at the initiative of Turkmenistan was noted.

In May 2021, within the framework of the regular session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Turkmenistan will present a draft concept and structure of the future special program for the Aral Sea.
