The Council of Foreign Ministers of the CIS countries at an extended meeting held today in Ashgabat adopted a draft statement on the prevention of an arms race in outer space, Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists, RIA Novosti reported.
"A new document for our foreign Ministry has been approved, a Ministerial statement on the prevention of an arms race in outer space has been adopted on the proposal of the Russian side," the Russian Minister said.
He noted that in this area, "Many alarming signs are accumulating that such plans still exist in some States."
"It is very important to draw attention to them and to ensure the work on the negotiating platforms in order to agree on the terms of non – deployment of weapons in space," Lavrov said.
The Russian foreign Minister also said that the meeting of the CIS foreign Ministry adopted a draft strategy for cooperation in the field of information security, as well as documents on strengthening military cooperation, including the formation of a joint unit for humanitarian demining and the formation of joint communication systems.
All documents approved at the meeting of the CIS Council of Ministers will be signed at the meeting of the Council of heads of Commonwealth States, which will be held in Ashgabat on Friday.
"In General, a rich agenda and, I think, we have prepared well for tomorrow's summit. I am sure that the heads of state will take important strategic decisions aimed at deepening and strengthening the CIS," Lavrov concluded.
