Foreign airlines are increasing transit flights through Turkmenistan and increasingly using the country's airports for refueling. This was reported in an article in the newspaper "Neutral Turkmenistan" by Hajimamed Niyazgeldiyev, senior civil dispatcher at the Main Center of the Unified Air Traffic Management System at Ashgabat International Airport, part of the State Service "Türkmenhowaýollary."
"Interest from foreign airlines in using our country's airspace and airports for transit flights and aircraft refueling has increased significantly. Air transport activity is also constantly growing. Therefore, foreign companies prefer to operate on shorter routes between Europe and Asia, equipped with the latest control and navigation equipment," noted Niyazgeldiyev.
According to him, foreign carriers choose the Turkmen route in part due to its modern navigation infrastructure. The country's airports are equipped with innovative radar and navigation air traffic control systems from the French company Thales. The air traffic control service serves aircraft from over 200 airlines worldwide.
Ashgabat International Airport, opened in 2016 and recognized as a leading technological complex in Central Asia, is capable of handling all types of aircraft and serving up to 1,600 passengers per hour.
Turkmenistan is a party to over 50 international civil aviation agreements, is a member of ICAO, and cooperates with the European Aviation Safety Agency. New air routes are being introduced in the North-South and East-West directions, increasing the frequency of air traffic.
