The first Russian freight train arrived at the dry port of “Aprin”, Iran's capital, after transiting through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, according to the Iranian news agency ISNA.
The train includes 62 forty-foot shipping containers carrying paper, pulp, and other paper products. The goods' final destinations are various regions of Iran and Iraq.
According to the agency, the train crossed the border between Iran and Turkmenistan near the Iranian city of Inche Burun and reached Tehran within 12 days.
According to Morteza Jafari, Deputy Director General of the Iranian Railways Organization, one transit container train from Russia currently arrives in Iran every 10 days on average. Work is underway to increase the number of such trains.
"Through coordination with other countries in the region and the CIS, we strive to make Iran a hub for exports, imports, and transit between neighboring countries," he added.
This step will mark the beginning of regular train service between Iran, Russia and neighboring Central Asian countries, ISNA emphasizes.
