Fishermen in the Indian state of Odisha have pulled a giant catfish weighing 170 kg out of the Bramhani river. The catch was made in the lower reaches of the river, near the Samal Dam, after the Rengali Dam's discharge gates were opened, MIR24 reports.
According to locals, it took four people to lift the fish. They believe that such a large catch was made possible by floodwaters that entered the reservoir after the floodgates were opened. People hope that other giant catfish can be caught in these waters.
According to experts, devil catfish, or gunchi, are found in the rivers of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. These predators can reach two meters in length and feed on fish and shrimp. There are also known cases of such catfish attacking people.
