A powerful earthquake has occurred in Myanmar, the magnitude of which, according to various estimates, was between 7,7 and 7,9. According to seismologists, the epicenter was located 33 km from the city of Mandalay, and the source was at a depth of 10 km. The earthquake was accompanied by aftershocks with a magnitude of 6,4, MIR 24 reports.
The natural disaster partially destroyed the historic Mandalay Palace, an important landmark and symbol of the city.
The earthquake's aftershocks reached five neighboring countries: Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Laos, and China. In Bangkok, a skyscraper under construction collapsed, trapping more than 40 workers. In Thailand, trading on the stock exchange was suspended, residents of high-rise buildings were advised to leave their homes, and subway operations were stopped.
Thai Prime Minister Phetongthan Shinawatra has cut short a working visit to Phuket province and declared a state of emergency in Bangkok.
