The European Parliament approved the entry of Croatia into the Schengen area, reports Reuters Agency. A positive decision was made following the results of the voting - 534 votes against 53.
The Council of the European Union confirmed that Croatia has fulfilled all the necessary requirements to become a full member of the Schengen Union.
“Croatia's place is in the Schengen zone. Criteria met. The European Parliament gave the green light. Now the Council of the EU must comply”, wrote the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola on her Twitter.
The final verdict on Croatia's accession to the Schengen will have to be taken by the Council of the European Union, consisting of 27 EU heads of government.
Membership in the Schengen passport-free zone permits citizens of the countries included in it to move freely between the borders of these states.
