The US national team has advanced past the first round of the World Cup playoffs for the first time in 24 years

The US national football team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2–0 in a World Cup round of 1/16 match. The game took place in Santa Clara, California.

The goals were scored by Folarin Balogun (45th minute) and Malik Tillman (82nd minute). In the 64th minute, Balogun received a straight red card—a decision made after match referee Raphael Claus reviewed the video replay. The US national team forward became the fourth player in history to score a goal and be sent off in a single World Cup knockout match, joining Brazilians Garrincha and Ronaldinho and Frenchman Zinedine Zidane.

The United States team advanced past the first round of the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in 24 years. At the 2022 tournament in Qatar, the US squad was eliminated in the Round of 16—at the time, the opening stage of the knockout phase under the 32-team format. The Americans failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia; they were eliminated in the Round of 16 in 2010 and 2014, did not advance past the group stage in 2006, and reached the quarterfinals in 2002.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina national team participated in the World Cup for the second time in its history and reached the knockout stage for the first time. At the 2014 tournament in Brazil, the team finished third in its group.

In the round of 1/8, the US national team will face Belgium, which defeated Senegal 3–2 in extra time in the first round of the playoffs. The match will take place in Seattle on July 7.

For the first time, the football World Cup is being held across three countries—the USA, Canada, and Mexico—with 48 national teams participating. The tournament concludes on July 19. The defending champion is Argentina.
