The Michael Jackson biopic has broken "Oppenheimer's" record for global box office earnings

The biographical film "Michael" has become the highest-grossing biopic in cinema history, grossing 977 million USD worldwide and surpassing "Oppenheimer" (2023), which earned $975 million. This was reported by Variety.

In addition, the film set a record for music biopics, surpassing "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2018), which grossed 911 million USD. During its opening weekend, the film grossed 97 million USD in the U.S. and 217 million USD worldwide—also record-breaking figures for the genre. As of the evening of June 28, international box office receipts stood at 607,2 million USD, with U.S. earnings at 370,2 million USD.

Director Antoine Fuqua has made a film about Michael Jackson’s creative journey—from his performances with the Jackson 5 to achieving the status of "King of Pop." The lead role is played by the singer's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, marking his acting debut. The film was produced by Lionsgate, GK Films, and Optimum Productions.

According to Variety, the film's commercial success could prompt Lionsgate to greenlight production on at least one more movie about the life of Michael Jackson.
