A sandwich is one of the simplest dishes that can be prepared in a hurry. One or two slices of bread, topped with butter, cheese, sausage, in short, anything you can put or spread on top - and the sandwich is ready. In fact, there are at least a dozen variations of such a simple dish, and some types of sandwiches can easily replace a full lunch.

The most famous sandwiches in the world are the hot dog and the hamburger (cheeseburger). An elongated bun with sausage and mustard or a round bun with a meat patty, cheese, tomato, pickled cucumber and sauce are the most popular types of fast food in the world. They are quite filling, and if they are filled with fresh vegetables, they are also healthy.

The sandwich is the second most popular sandwich in the world. Named after the English aristocrat Lord Sandwich, who was so keen on playing cards that he forgot about eating. Slices of bread with meat were served to him directly to the table. A classic modern sandwich is two pieces of white bread without a crust with any boiled or smoked meat, cucumber and lettuce, or slices of bread, and cheese, tomatoes and butter between them. The sandwich can be either cold or hot.

Italian bruschetta is originally a poor man's dish. It is a large piece of white bread, lightly toasted or dried in the oven, rubbed with garlic and sprinkled with olive oil. Sun-dried or fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil are usually placed on top. Modern versions of bruschetta also contain olives, seafood, sausages or meats.

Shawarma or doner, the birthplace of which is Türkiye, has long conquered the whole world. Although its basis is not the usual slice of bread, but lavash, essentially shawarma is the same sandwich, but with an oriental flavor. One shawarma, containing bread, meat, fresh vegetables and delicious sauce, easily replaces a full meal, as it contains everything you need - proteins, carbohydrates, fiber and fats.

Mexican fajitas are reminiscent of shawarma. Instead of pita bread, they are based on Indian soft corn tortillas. They wrap beef steak, tomatoes, chili peppers, lettuce and avocado sauce - guacamole. It is believed that fajitas were invented by Mexican shepherds working on ranches in Texas.

Croque monsieur and croque madame are French hot sandwiches with cheese, ham and butter, fried on a baking sheet or frying pan. “Croque Madame” differs from “Monsieur” only in the presence of a fried egg, which is placed on top - the fried egg resembles a woman’s hat.

Canapés and tartlets - tiny one-bite sandwiches - are a common dish on holiday tables or buffets. These mini-sandwiches can consist of anything: cheese, ham, shrimp, bacon, seafood or vegetable paste, olives - the recipe is limited only by the cook’s imagination or available products. The ingredients are secured on the canapes with small wooden or plastic skewers. Tartlets are small baked “plates” made from shortbread or plain dough, into which you can also put everything you can find in the refrigerator.

Pan bagnat is a sandwich made by French fishermen from Nice. This is a round bun rubbed with garlic and drizzled with olive oil. The filling is tuna (canned), egg, onion and olives. It is believed that after lying in the refrigerator overnight, the pan-bagnat only becomes tastier.

A variety of breads are used for sandwiches: it can be white bread, rye bread, with bran, lavash or pita (similar to lavash, a thin sour dough flatbread hollow inside), toast and croutons, and even diet bread. Based on bread, a tasty and unusual sandwich can be made from anything.

Although a sandwich in any form does not belong to the so-called “haute cuisine”, you can order it in any restaurant. Typically, restaurants serve traditional hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches with a variety of fillings, but sometimes they are made according to the recipes of the customers themselves.
