Charles Aznavour monument was ceremoniously opened in Yerevan

The grand opening of a monument to the legendary French chansonnier of Armenian origin, National Hero of Armenia Charles Aznavour took place on the square of the same name in the center of Yerevan, RIA Novosti reports.

The monument by the famous sculptor David Minasyan is called "Boheme" in honor of the artist's world-renowned composition. The author was chosen following a creative competition.

Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan emphasized the symbolic significance of the monument, noting the contribution of the Armenian people to the development of world art. According to him, Aznavour's work did not need translation or additional explanations, being the universal language of the soul.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, relatives of the late artist, the diplomatic corps, cultural figures and ordinary residents of the capital. The building of the “Moscow” cinema was decorated with portraits of the musician, and a choir performed his famous works.

Charles Aznavour, born to Armenian immigrants in Paris, died on October 1, 2018, at the age of 93. Co-writing more than 1,3 thousand songs, he sold 180 million copies of his records worldwide and starred in more than 60 films.
