The Federal Agency for Food Chain Safety in Belgium (AFSCA) has issued an important warning regarding the consumption of Christmas trees. The cause for concern was a publication by environmental activists in the city of Ghent, who suggested creative ways to dispose of festive trees, “MIR 24” reports with reference to Agence France Press.

Environmentalists inspired by Scandinavian traditions have recommended using pine needles in a variety of dishes, including sandwich spreads and flavoured butter.

However, AFSCA experts strongly disagree with such advice. According to their conclusion, Christmas trees may contain pesticides, making them potentially dangerous for both humans and animals.

Following AFSCA's intervention, environmental activists have reconsidered their position. They have changed the provocative headline “Eat your Christmas tree” to the more neutral wording “Scandinavians eat their Christmas trees”.
