Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas has become the new holder of the title of the oldest person on the planet. She received this status after the death of the previous record holder, Japanese Tomiko Itooka, who passed away at the end of December 2024 at the age of 116, “MIR 24” reports.
As of January 7, 2025, Inah Canabarro Lucas is 116 years, six months, and 30 days old. She is not only the oldest woman in the world, but also the only living person born in 1908.
A native of the Brazilian city of Sao Francisco de Assis, Inach converted to faith at the age of 16. At 26, while in Uruguay, she took monastic vows. She dedicated most of her life to teaching Portuguese and mathematics in schools. In 2018, when she turned 110, the nun received a special blessing from Pope Francis.
Inah Canabarro Lucas became the second nun to hold the longevity record after Sister Andre (Lucile Randon), who passed away at the age of 118. The absolute record for longevity belongs to the Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who lived 122 years and died in 1997.
