The growing threat of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria could lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity in the coming decades. By 2050, the total number of victims of antibiotic-resistant bacteria could reach 40 million people, TASS reports with reference to The Guardian.

Sally Davies, the former UK chief medical officer, expressed grave concern about the situation, saying that around a million people were already dying each year because antibiotics were ineffective against resistant bacteria, and that figure would continue to rise rapidly over the next 25 years.

Deaths from bacterial resistance are projected to double by mid-century. The main reason for this alarming trend is the widespread use of antibiotics, including in food production. As a result of this practice, bacteria evolve to resist drugs.
