The Cultural Center of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Ashgabat hosted the celebration of Yalda, one of the oldest Iranian holidays, dedicated to the winter solstice.

The event was attended by Iranian citizens living in Turkmenistan, as well as students. Thematic theatrical performances were prepared in honor of the holiday, telling about the traditions and meaning of Yalda.

Speaking to the audience, the Cultural Advisor of the Iranian Embassy in Turkmenistan Navid Rasouli noted the special significance of the holiday:

“Yalda, or the Night of Chilleh, is not just a date on the calendar, but an important tradition demonstrating the rich culture of the Iranian people. This holiday, the history of which goes back about seven thousand years, helps to strengthen family ties and friendship between peoples.”

At the end of the evening, a festive dinner with traditional treats was organized for the guests. According to ancient tradition, on Yalda night it is customary to gather with the whole family, read poems, share stories and treat yourself to fruits typical for this holiday – pomegranates and watermelons, which symbolize well-being and health. It is worth noting that the Yalda holiday is included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO and is widely celebrated not only in Iran, but also in other countries of the region.
