In 2024, Russian-Turkmen relations reached a qualitatively new level of strategic partnership, Russian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Ivan Volynkin said at a press conference.
The head of the diplomatic mission noted that this year, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov visited Russia three times: in May to participate in the celebrations dedicated to the 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and twice in October to participate in CIS meetings and the BRICS Plus/Outreach summit. Another important event was the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Ashgabat for the international forum "Interconnection of Times and Civilizations", dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the poet Magtymguly Fragi.
Humanitarian cooperation
Educational cooperation has reached record levels: more than 47 000 Turkmen students are studying at Russian universities. The Russian government has increased the quota for budget education to 500 places.
In 2024, more than 130 joint humanitarian events were held with the participation of over 12 000 people. Celebrations dedicated to the 300th anniversary of Magtymguly Fragi took place, monuments to literary classics were unveiled in Russia and Turkmenistan.
Consular statistics
According to the Russian embassy, over 109 000 visas were issued in the first 11 months of 2024, which is 50% more than in 2023. The number of tourist visas increased by more than 60%.
International cooperation
Russia and Turkmenistan continue to closely cooperate on international platforms, including the UN, CIS, BRICS. The countries are working together on draft resolutions on issues of peace, neutrality and sustainable development.
Prospects
The parties expressed confidence in further strengthening of the strategic partnership. A meeting of the leaders is planned for December 25-26 in St. Petersburg as part of the informal CIS summit.
Commenting on the results of the year, Russian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Ivan Volynkin noted that 2024 has become a year of strengthening friendship between the two states, significant progress is visible in all areas of interaction.
