A two-day international expert-level meeting was held in Ashgabat on protecting critical energy infrastructure from terrorist attacks. The event, organized by the Government of Turkmenistan jointly with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the Government of the Russian Federation, also served as a platform for the launch of a Technical Guide on this topic.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, during the meeting, participants discussed threats to energy infrastructure and exchanged best practices in this area. Particular attention was paid to strengthening international cooperation and coordination of efforts to ensure the reliability and stability of cross-border supplies of energy resources.

The UN General Assembly resolution “The key role of reliable and stable energy connectivity in ensuring sustainable development”, adopted at the initiative of Turkmenistan, provides for the consolidation of efforts of the international community in overcoming energy crises and calls for ensuring the reliability and stability of cross-border supplies of energy resources.

The UN Global Program to Protect Vulnerable Targets from Terrorist Threats, launched in 2021, continues to support Member States in building their capacity and developing networks of experts.

The international meeting in Ashgabat was an important step in strengthening global security and protecting critical energy infrastructure.
